About Jianantonic

December 22nd, 2009

I’m Jianantonic, aka Meg Massie Myers, and I do a lot of things, but most of all I travel.  I really started traveling when I got into competitive duplicate bridge.  I began to tag along with my husband, McKenzie, to tournaments all over North America where he was playing professionally.  At first, I was a bridge player who traveled to play bridge.  Now I’m a traveler who plays bridge when I travel.

I was born and raised in lovely Charlottesville, Virginia, but now I unpack my suitcases in Portland, Oregon.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Jianantonic?

Jianantonic is a somewhat obscure reference to my favorite travel literature of all time — Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy.  I spelled it this way because it was what was available when I opened my first instant messaging account, and I’ve been using the alias online since I was 13.  I don’t like gin or tonic, just British wit.  If you’re buying me drinks, I’ll take a bourbon and ginger, please.

What’s your favorite place to visit?

It sounds cliché, but of all the places I’ve ever been, Portland is my favorite, which is why I chose to live here, and I’d recommend it to anyone for a vacation, any time of year.  I love looking over our beautiful skyline and seeing Mt. Hood standing guard over the city.  If I had to pick one place to spend the rest of my life, it would be right here, but I’m glad I don’t have to do that.

Honorable mentions go to Maui, Las Vegas, Guatemala, and Lane Stadium, where the Virginia Tech Hokies play football.  I’m sure I’ll be adding more to my list of favorites — there are still lots of places I haven’t been.

How did you get into blogging?

I’ve always liked to tell my stories.  My first professional blogging job was on AOL’s wedding blog, AisleDash.  That opened more doors to me, including travel blogging, and I quit my lame desk job in November of 2007.  I’ve been freelancing ever since, writing about every topic under the sun.  My passions are travel and bridge, and you’ll find both at Jianantonic.com.

Bridge, really?

Really.  I’ve been involved in the game since infancy, and I started taking it seriously as a player in 2006.  I’m glad I did — I met my husband at a tournament in Tennessee, and he’s the one who made this lifestyle a reality for me.  If he hadn’t swept me off my feet, I’d still be at my desk job writing about stock options.

If you want to read more about my bridge adventures, check out my Bridge page, where I’ll be writing about all the tournaments I attend.  For more technical bridge blogging, bookmark McKenzie’s page, DoubleSqueeze.  You’ll find some of my bridge writing there as well.
